As a parent and a teacher, I believe it is important to be involved in your kids’ media consumption. Finding developmentally appropriate shows that reflect your values or provide discussion opportunities is important, but it is not always easy.
I started enjoying anime over twenty years ago, thanks to my insomnia. I would turn on a cartoon station in the middle of the night, figuring it wouldn’t be too engaging. Instead, I discovered fun, action anime like Inuyasha, Naruto, and Bleach. Fast forward to 2020, my kids were getting interested in anime as the COVID-19 pandemic kept us home. I quickly discovered that the spectrum of anime is excellent and that not all of them were appropriate for my kids. I tried looking for parental guides and was unsatisfied with what was available. I like anime, so I tend to watch it with my kids, but I’m not always available to watch with them. So, I used to have them watch the first episode with me for anything rated above their age, but this plan bit me once or twice, too (thanks, Attack on Titans). So, here I am, an anime-loving 40-something Californian mom with teenagers trying to share my expertise with other parents.
Anime enthusiast and artist interpreted favorite moms from many animes into one art piece. The 100% hand-drawn piece is a source of pride for the AG4M team.
